"Practice the minimum."
It's what Kenny Werner told Brad Melhdau (Shut up, Maria!) he overheard Bill Evans say at a "gathering". I'll say more about this later, what he meant by it (you already know).

I'm going to tell you something, but you're gonna have to keep it to yourself. Jazz and Bluegrass are the 2 genres of music that are the most cognate.

You're a really great writer. Sorry, but you are. I've gotten a bit put out with exerting some reticence with the mutadsoc. So there you have it. You entertain me (in the strictest and most substantive sense of that word) in the most varied ways.

Not many things worse than trust fund hippies at a Bluegrass Festival. But something tells me you already know that too.

Re: "Practice the minimum."

I've got about as much in common with trust fund hippies as I do with authentic pickers and/or grinners.  Which is to say, not much.  (Do bluegrass players have to count, by the way?)

I'm finding YouTube is a really great tool for looking around and watching and listening to people play.  Really fascinating to see what works, what doesn't.  I was watching that Canadian dude playing some other tune, one I happen to know, still using his same chord progression and even plinking out a simple melody at one point, completely unimpressive playing, but nice enough.  Next I watched some kid crank through the same tune as quick as he could, hitting all the notes, but sounding like a fucking robot.  There's something ineffable in there, man.  I like on all these videos that I can watch people's hands too.  Maybe one day, I'll figure out how they make so many things happen without seeming to move their fingers.  Anyway.  Wish I had all day to just fuck around with this sort of thing.

K (Also, thanks.)
