That reminded me

of an Uileann Piper I know here, who says similar things about his instrument. He bemoans the fact that because of its seven reeds he'll never be able to master all the sounds it's capable of making. He used to joke that we gave the Scots the bagpipes as a spoof and they haven't cottoned on yet. He's one of the best pipers in Ireland. Then, there's Tom Waits who fantasizes about chucking his grand piano out the second story window of his studio. He said he learned percussion out of sheer exasperation, so that he could finally vent the pent by beating the shit out of things.

Enjoyable read. Thanks.

Pronounced "illin'", right?

Now there, sir, is monomania.  Good lord.

I definitely see the appeal of beating the shit out of things.  For the drums, I've been told you need rhythm to play them, though, and they're big and expensive.  (The family experiment with teh garbage can drum kit never did work out, although we ended up with some funny pictures.  What a clusterfuck that one turned out to be.)

Re: Pronounced "illin'", right?

Yep, that's it.

Waits will beat on anything. Don't know if the guy believes in the drum qua drum. In 'Chocolate Jesus' he has a cock crowing for background effect, and in 'Buzz Fledderjohn' there's a hoarse Rottweiler wuff-wuffing. He says he experiments with rhythm by beating on things. Imagine. No wonder he lives out in the middle of bumblefuck. Don't ya love this line:

I seen a python swallowing a Dobermann whole
Piranhas swimming in a mixing bowl
