Cog
Modified By Michael Kenney on 6/30/2008 6:37:49 AM)

Helped my sister J host a huge golf outing on Friday. Well, she did the organizing, scheduling, and all of the rest of the work involved in bringing together 416 people for a day of golf at Cog Hill. My sister is the alumni director at a wonderful little Benedictine Prep School in Lisle, which was attended by all 6 of the Kenneys. The outing is a gathering of alums, students, faculty, family, and friends. It's a very interesting school, but I still find it amazing that people from 30-40-50 years ago would take a Friday off of work to go and keep in touch with old friends over golf. I've been helping her for 3 years now, after having played in the previous 2 tournaments. (Now that I've given up golf because 40 years was just about enough of that fucking game.)

My job this year, like the last 2, was to sit by the 4th green of the Ravines (#2) Course, and attest the closest to the pin contest, and also serve as a witness in case someone got a hole-in-one, which would win a 2009 Chevy Cobalt thanks to Bill Kay Chevrolet. (Bill was Class of '76 and I was Class of '78.) This is our 5th year at Cog Hill. What a great job my sister does, and we're already in for next June 26th.I've really come to enjoy these outings, and look forward to hearing from some of my old firends. E-mail is great, but a few drinks at the 19th Hole is better.

At 8:30AM this past Friday, I was talking to a guy named Geoff who was in J's class. (my sister L was doing the same job as I on a different course, and my sister K was playing in the tournament. 4 of us at Cog Hill on a Friday in June.) Anyway, not only does Geoff know my sister, he met his new wife via the alum e-mail network. Geoff and his wife were classmates in 1979, but didn't get married until 2008.

Gotta love shit like that.

Re: Thumbs

After re-reading , I decided that was way way way way more than people would want to know about my Friday or my late mother-in-law. (love the edit function)

Can you imagine, 40 years carrying a bag of stciks and hitting a little white ball? What the hell was I thinking?

Ah who am I kidding, I'm just taking a sabbatical.

Re: Thumbs

The old man took me to hit my first driving range bucket of balls when I was 6, and I put the sticks down when I was 46. If I added up all of the loot I've dumped on balls, clubs, shoes, greens fees, and drinks ...coulda had a Ferrari.

Re: Thumbs

i was about to wonder aloud why it is the best looking cars tend to live permanently in the shop.  then i remembered it's because they are invariably built by either italians or brits.  that reminds me: saw an achingly beautiful jaguar convertible the other day.  i don't often get car lust.  mostly i think of them as tools (hence my liking of small station wagons).  ah, but a classic jaguar will get me every time.

Re: Thumbs

One of the many reasons to watch Austin Powers.

A Jag painted like a Union Jack.
