Reading on in Penrose's book, it looks like the view I'm clumsily taking here--that you basically need flawed computers for consciousness--is the one that Alan Turing (father of computer science, blah blah blah) adopted.  I guess  that's reassuring, even if Penrose is trying at length now to disagree with exactly that.
