Re: all-time "just miss" franchises

of course, seems like longer ago. Still remember Thurman Thomas sitting on his helmut, refusing to enter the game (though he's been forgiven). Jim Kelly (as in "ever popular" Jim Kelly) gunnning to buy them by the way, has promised to keep the team in Buffalo.

anyway, just scouting around and think I found one: the Meredith Cowboys of the late 60's (Ice Bowl loss to Green Bay, etc); I would have guessed that Meredith won one, but he didn't. also notice that the early 90's Pirates never made it past Atlanta to the finals, and as mentioned lots of just missed making the list teams that grabbed one or two championships after it seemed they had shot their load (so to speak).

Re: all-time "just miss" franchises

Year in and year out they gave my Bears a beating. Year after year they annihilated the Black and Blue Division.  Eller, Page, Marshall, Siemen, Krause, Tarkenton. White. Rashad. Foreman. Tingelhoff.

Lost Super Bowls 4, 8, 9, & 11.

Near Miss Franchise, thy name is Bud Grant's Minnesota Vikings.

Thank you!

That is the one I knew I was missing. (And where's bacon/Kevin, too young for Bud Grant's stint in Winnipeg I guess). I'm guessing too that Joe Kapp (another CFL-er) QB'd at least one of those teams. I've posted on that team too by the way, DE Eller at like 240 would be pushed around by today's linebackers, and Page at 270 or so was like the biggest guy in the league. Fun stuff.

Also note: another small market team.

Re: Thank you!

...with a rabid fan base that treated each week of the regular season like it was the only reason to live. (Which, if you're in Bloomington,Mn wearing a beaver coat, blond braids, and a metal helmet with horns on the side, it was.) And by the time the Super Bowl rolled around....

Ron Yary,....Fred Cox,.....I haven't googled any of these names. I can still remeber how they looked, all purple and shit.

Unlike Orr's farewell with the Hawks, Alan Page did a nice job here for a few years before putting on the robes.
