The Talking Heads

It was a rule that a grad student party had to have the heads on the turntable (if you didn't own a cd player yet).

The Pretenders made their return with Learning to Crawl.  Petty and Springsteen were doing the American thing, while the evil legacy of David Bowie lived on in the UK.

Laurie Anderson was big?  I recall she only was heard by a small subset of the Talking Heads group.

David Byrne is da bomb.

I never saw the Heads in concert, but I did see Byrne in one of his early post-Heads incarnations with a Brazilian backup band.  (The album was Rei Momo, and it was great).  I had great seats, like 4th row center in the Tower Theater, which is a great smallish location to see bands.  They did Latinized versions of a lot of the Talking Heads catalog as well as the stuff from the new album.  It was cool and hot and sweaty dance music with a biting lyrical edge. I wish he were more active now.
