So - is Superman using his x ray vision to look through so-and-so's blouse a huge blunder in that it totally destroys the character's character? Or, is it merely a one-off attempt to add adult filler to something that we all (wink, wink) new he must have tried, but couldn't appear in the comic?
Historically, the characters in comics underwent important character transformations in the comics themselves. They even killed off Superman to bring back a different sort of Superman.
Daredevil went through a character change, becoming darker and sexier as a character, losing silly sidekick Foggy. He even got involved with skimpy outfit chick Elektra, over the more prudish whatever her name was.
Batman, for years, was just a silly comic character, who went the Daredevil dark route, just because it worked for Daredevil.
So - what counts as a character updating for the good and what counts as character assassination? Let's remember, Superman, too, was, at times extremely childish - fighting weird silly bad guys like Mr. mxplx whatever it was and Solomon Grundy, and for a while showed up with Superdog - Krypto.
And you know, Superman too, was updated before he was killed off, several times. In the late 70's (I think) the various main characters of Superman appeared on the cover in circles. Lois Lane changed from the short haired reporter to the 5'11" superthin supermodel with long black hair and extremely short mini skirt, in a slinky pose.
I've never been a Superman fan, but to me, the main theme was the conflict of wanting a "normal" human life, while wanting to also be a champion of justice, when might was needed for just causes.
Superman certainly wasn't above breaching confidences though, when he was in the Clark Kent mode. He would use his x-ray vision to see through envelopes that Lois had, to know what story Lois was working on - even sometimes using the information to scoop her (and sometimes doing the nice thing and guiding her to the story).
But in any event, if I were to make a movie to be seen by adults about Superman, I've got to say, I'd want to address the sex issue - and bring new meaning to the label 'Man of Steel'.
(Sorry. Maybe, it's just me.)
