A fairly good (but very badly titled) novella by Vernor Vinge had a bunch of teenagers chasing around a movie opening as full-media event. He made a fun case of it, imagining a computer interface and network a bit more advanced and a bit more ubiquitous than it is now. It was called "Fast Times at Fairmont High" (he later turned it into a mediocre novel) and probably not a bad read for the Abrams fans.
