What's in a name?

John,

I actually use my real name as a style decoy.

It's easy, almost irrisistably tempting, to attack a guy whose Fray nic is Yiddish for filthy scum. But under my real name I'm some Irish guy from Illinois, and a real live person. I figure by putting my name up there, I personalize my scribbling.  And by doing that, perhaps, just maybe, I might avoid attacks by way of the symapthy vote.

Kidding aside, I thought about it for a few minutes before telling Mike my real name, and writing crappy stuff under it.

Online identity theft- I don't worry about it because of the steps I've taken to protect that, although I can understand why people might want to keep full names private for this reason.

Harrassment at the workplace- I don't worry about that, because if someone decides to call my boss with a bullshit claim about me, they're calling me. (I won't fire me, even if I did act like a dickweed.) If someone calls my boss to tell him I'm a shitty writer, I'm even more confident I won't fire me for that reason, because that's old news.

Fraysters- I too was hoping to avoid that sort of shit, and for the most part have. Mike has done a terrific job of watching the gate. Frankly, I don't give a fuck if Fraysters know my name, although they're the most likely suspects I can think of who might try some shit with the info.  Having said that, I would rather that a fellow Quiblit member not post a link to my name here, over on BotF. That's just asking for trouble.

Sincerely,

Fred Derf

Re: What's in a name?

Michael,

'The self is only interesting as an illustration, and when we talk about ourselves the facts are usually irrelevant and untrue. The mood is wrong.' I'll stand by that, and this from a man who also said that 'the essence of individuality is the dancing flame of the writer's personality, or style'.  The style's the thing. Writers must find theirs, begrudgers bedamned.

I feel it liberating to use my own name. The whole anonymous fray business, unless it's an experiment to find a voice, y'know, try on many hats, see which one fits, or just a way to deceive or cowardly attack others, or again merely a game, is inimical to the cultivation of style. Writers either put their cards on the table eventually or they don't. If it's patently obvious who you are from your style, then you're right there's nothing in a name, but subverting that style only to persist in an anonymous game seems absolutely futile. How long are you going to play that game if your aim is to succeed as a writer? The who is the style. The what is as common as the frayster asshole.

dear fred,

you might want to adjust the view from the backside while you're repairing those plumbing pipes.

Re: What's in a name?

Awww, what fun is life if I can't flash a little butt-cleavage once in awhile? Not only is it fun, but it's a great place to hold a pencil. (Behind the ear is so passe.)

Sincerely,

Fred  Derf

Worker's Bum is hereditary.

I know three generations of navvies that are badly afflicted.

Re: What's in a name?

I didn't know that about ass-smile flashing being genetic.

So the reason I have a tendency to flash butt-crack  lies in my jeans?

(sorry buddy, I had to)
