Hillary: Guns and religion
Modified By Michael Kenney on 4/16/2008 1:59:21 PM)

Yep. That's what I think of when I think of Hillary Rodham Clinton. Guns first, followed closely by her deeply held religious beliefs.

How couldn't I think that? She's always harping on those two subjects. From her days as the First Lady, I can clearly recall her strong pro NRA positions, and then of course her preaching. Her testifyin'. Always with the Bible under her arm, and always packing heat.

The absurdity of this nominating proicess is beyond astonishing. It's fucking surreal.

Jeremiah Wright? Bitter rural Pennsylvanians? Guns and religion? These are the issues facing America as a whole, and the Democrats in particular?

The very issues with which Hillary now panders to the gun totin', god fearin' people of Pa in order to throw a wrench into the Obama nomination, are the very same issues McCain will use to win Pa in November. There is no way on earth that Hillary Clinton expects to win the god and guns crowd in November, and yet those issues serve her purposes at the moment, ...and so she uses them.

Said it before, and I'll say it again. Hillary Clinton is more interested in winning the Dem nomination than she is in her party winning the White House. She's going to hand this thing to McCain, and she couldn't care less.

So the debate's on

And admittedly, I missed a few minutes putting in quality time with the kids, so maybe the first question was about Bush admitting to torture last week.  (Hey, it could happen, not that either of the fuckers really gives a shit about it.)  But here I've watched 15 straight minutes of Clinton rather sleazily dragging around that "bitter" comment and dragging Farrakhan into the Wright thing.  (I don't loathe Hillary particularly more than any of them, but Barack is whooping her on dignity points.)  And to be fair, the commentators are enabling the hell out of it.  Five comparatively short minutes of dragging around the Bosnia thing, and here's where Barry interjects: this is bullshit, Chuckles--things are dire.

Gibson stops him, now tell me about the lapel pin.  Stephanopoulos adds, now don't you should renounce your neighbor, and everyone you ever talked to, ever.

Here's why I don't watch these things.

Both candidates look exhausted.  She's shameless with the insinuations.

And I curse too much.  Even completely sober.

Re: So the debate's on

I'm not even watching it Keith. I'm at my office doing paperwork and arguing with fraysters over Swit's post.

I swear too much as well. Too many F-bombs. I'm working on it.

Re: Hillary: Guns and religion
The only presidential hopeful that I can think of who's been better than Hillary at being all things to all people is, that's right, Bloom County's own Meadowcratic nominee and favorite son, Bill The Cat. (The bulb is out in the library so I can't find the strip in which the punchline is something like "He's been one of us", or something. Berk Breathed is a personal hero of mine. And I'd link to it, but I think he's a bit protective of his oeuvre, as he should be. So I can't find it. Deej?)

Keith. Ditto. I've come to suspect/understand what attracted Bill and Hill to each other: smarminess. No one wants a woman president more than I do (okay, probably some woman wants it more). But Clinton ain't it. Their behavior with regard to public discourse versus private financial endeavors is despicable.

Gregor's post on the matter on BotF was perfection. I'd let him do my political thinking for me 7 days a week and twice on Sundays.

Dear God man you are funny. And trenchant, and stuff. I cannot abide her anymore. She seems to think that because her baggage is old it won't get dug up again. All I could think of last night was:

White House Travel Office. Surprise $100k made in the commodities pits in an account in her name, which she didn't trade, and the profits, it was strongly suggested, were based on insider information. Marc Rich pardon. Rose Law Firm billing records. When Billy Graham's kid said God was punishing America for its immorality though the  9/11 attacks, I don't remember Hillary complaining about it. (Though perhaps I just missed it.) I don't remember them abandoning the Grahams, who "helped rehabilitate Bill" from his "adultery problem."  Taking money from lobbyists out the wazoo. Being against guns before being for them.  Selling timeshares in the Lincoln bedroom. Ties to a few different indicted lobbyists, some of whom were major donors.

I stack that up against being a member of a church with a semiwhackjob pastor, not wearing a flag lapel pin, and being on a board with a guy who had been convicted of a crime 40 years before that Hillary probably would have defended pro bono when in law school, and I say "wha?"  Of course there should be a woman president. Of course she's smart.  And maybe we should just accept that people who want this job have the blind ambition and smarminess to achieve it. But I can't accept it, when it seems to me Obama is neither.  Not perfect, of course. He's certainly got issues, and there are undoubtedly some things she would do better. But he hasn't come full circle on his beliefs the way she has.  Hillary is now a pro-gun, pro-religion person who thinks life may begin at conception whose enjoyed more than $100 million in income in the past 5 years. To me, that's a Republican.  Frankly, if I'm going to vote Republican, I'd rather vote for one who at least has been more or less identifying as one all along.

On the superficial front, they do both look exhausted, though her makeup artists are super. (Not so much the stylists, though. She always wears suits cut for men. Go shopping with Nancy Pelosi, Hil.)  Can we please shorten the primary process, please? I'm exhausted too, and I don't have her makeup artist.
